2022 Kia Sorento Hybrid AWD review

The burgeoning South Korean automaker is battling Toyota by adding gasoline electric power to one of its most popular cars.

Kia has added a hybrid model to its seven-seater Sorento SUV range, challenging Toyota’s petrol-electric Kluger.

The Sorento Hybrid is only available in the premium GT-Line version, and buyers can choose between front or all-wheel drive for around $ 72,400 and $ 75,500 respectively.

This represents a premium of around $ 7,000 over the front-wheel drive GT-Line petrol and all-wheel drive GT-Line diesel. It’s also around $ 12,000 cheaper than the Sorento plug-in hybrid which offers a larger battery and can be driven up to 68km on pure electric power.

Kia claims the front-wheel drive hybrid drinks 5.3 l / 100km and the heaviest all-wheel drive model tested here sips 5.8 l / 100km.

We managed to reach around 7 liters / 100km in a mix of open road and urban driving, which is impressive for a large rig.

On the road, the Sorento is built for comfort, with well-ordered suspension that easily absorbs bumps and wrinkles. The trade-off is a bit of a lean in the corners, which is typical of larger family SUVs.

Precise steering and all-wheel drive grip provide safety in the wet.

The Sorento’s hybrid configuration combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine with a small 44 kW electric motor for a combined output of 169 kW and 350 Nm of torque.

There is a lot of grit from the start and decent thrust when the Sorento is called upon to overtake at speed.

During most of the commute, the gasoline engine does most of the heavy lifting, but the electric motor kicks in occasionally. The small 1kWh battery recharges when braking.

The Sorento is quiet, with only a hint of hum from the electric motor and a distant rumble of the turbo engine entering the passenger compartment. On the motorway, road and tire noise is minimal.

The Sorento is smaller than the Kluger and is evident in urban areas where the Kia is easy to maneuver in tight parking lots and downtown streets. Available only in GT-Line version, the hybrid comes with the lot.

Passengers are greeted by soft quilted nappa leather seats, which are electronically adjustable, heated and ventilated at the front. The outboard second row seats are also heated.

The cabin has a mix of soft-touch materials and glossy black surfaces, while ambient lighting enhances the mood at night.

Entertainment includes a 12-speaker Bose stereo, operated via a 10.25-inch center touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A high-resolution 12.3-inch digital driver display provides useful information.

The cockpit has several USB charging points on all rows and there is a charging pad for wireless devices in the front center console. Passengers in all three rows are pampered with individual air vents and there are eight cup holders.

Families will appreciate the integrated second row sun shades, while the third row is comfortable for younger children and teenagers.

The safety equipment is complete.

The Sorento will automatically brake if it detects a potential collision with a car, pedestrian or cyclist.

It will also alert the driver if there is something in the car’s blind spot and will sound an alarm if a car is passing by as you exit a driveway or parking lot.

Lane Keeping Assist technology will pull the wheel if you start pulling out of your lane, while a bird’s eye camera makes parking a breeze.

Kia covers its vehicles with an unlimited seven-year / kilometer warranty, but maintenance is incredibly expensive at more than $ 3,000 over five years.

VERDICT 3.5 / 5

Good-looking, well-equipped family SUV with decent fuel economy. Cheaper grades and a more affordable maintenance schedule would be welcome.
