AFC Cup: Laguna loses early lead, bows to Malaysia’s Terengganu
MANILA, Philippines–Stallion-Laguna squandered a two-goal lead once more to Malaysian side Terengganu, this time resulting in a 3-2 defeat at home on Wednesday in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup at Binan Football Stadium.
Sony Norde produced the winner four minutes before stoppage time as Stallion finally paid the price after a similar sequence occurred two weeks ago in Terengganu when the two sides settled for a 2-2 draw.
The loss came despite Stallion taking a 2-0 lead in the first 14 minutes on goals from Junior Sam and Finn McDaniel.
Matthew Nierras gave up an own goal for Stallion in the 33rd before Ivan Mamut equalized for the visitors in the 67th.
It was the third loss in four matches in Group G for the Horsemen, who could only produce one point in that stretch.
That practically ended Stallion’s chances in the chase for a spot in the knockout phase of the second-tier Asian club competition.
Meanwhile, Dynamic Herb Cebu eyes another victory over Myanmar’s Shan United when the two sides square off in their AFC Cup match in Yangon on Thursday.
Cebu became the first Filipino club to claim a win in all AFC competitions two weeks prior when it beat Shan United, 1-0, at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The Gentle Giants hope to do it once again at 8 p.m. Manila time at Thuwunna Stadium.
