AFL 2022 News: Rhyan Mansell accused of hitting Jack Ginnivan, suspended for match

Richmond defender Rhyan Mansell was accused of hitting Collingwood’s Jack Ginnivan during Saturday’s clash at the MCG.

Richmond defender Rhyan Mansell was accused of hitting Collingwood’s young gun Jack Ginnivan during Saturday afternoon’s clash at the MCG.

Towards the end of the third quarter of the Round 8 race, Ginnivan attempted to pick up the foot before Mansell landed on his back.

When the siren sounded for three quarters of the time, Mansell seemed to stick his forearm into the back of Ginnivan’s head on two occasions, triggering a short scrum between the players.

“A double forearm behind the head,” Hawthorn legend Jason Dunstall told Fox Footy.

“He’ll pay a fine or a week for that – probably a fine because it was low impact. But maybe there could be an option to pay a free kick after the siren. “

St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt continued: “Mansell elbowed the summit, comes back a second time, which is pretty bad.”

On Sunday, the AFL confirmed that Mansell had received a match suspension following an investigation by the Match Review Officer.

“Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct, low impact, high contact,” the AFL said in a statement.

“The incident was classified as a one-match penalty as a first offense. The player can accept a one-match penalty with an anticipated reason.

Mansell will subsequently miss next weekend’s game against Hawthorn.

Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference, Richmond manager Damien Hardwick insisted he didn’t see the incident, denying that Ginnivan was being unfairly targeted during the 27-point win.

“At the end of the day, I haven’t noticed that compared to any other player, but we want our little defenders to be physical and, like most other AFL defenders, would do exactly the same,” he said.

The next Richmond will face the Hawthorn Hawks at the MCG on Saturday, May 14, with the first rebound scheduled for 1:45 pm AEST.
