Alexander Wang returns to the catwalk after claims of sexual assault
LOS ANGELES (AP) – After taking a hiatus amid allegations of sexual assault, designer Alexander Wang’s return to the runway was greeted with adoration during his highly anticipated show in Los Angeles.
Some yelled “This is great!” and I love it! “while others cheered on Wang’s 50-look collection at his“ Fortune City ”show that celebrated Asian-American culture in historic Chinatown on Tuesday night.
The admiration of the crowd was a welcome sight for Wang who held his first show since 2019 shortly before several people accused him of sexual assault and drugging male and transgender models.
Wang initially denied the allegations – which first came in late 2020 – calling them “baseless”. Last year, in a statement, she said she disagreed with some details of the accuser, adding that he would “set the best example” as a public figure.
The allegations disguised Wang’s brand, but did not completely cripple him, especially in China. She still dressed famous people like Rihanna and Julia Fox while posting a recent campaign with Lucy Liu. His brand is still present in some major retailers.
The event on Tuesday evening had the support of 800 guests who lined up to attend the Wang show, where a red light covered the Central Plaza area. It was a spectacular event with stars like Kimora Lee Simmons and Lisa Rinna sitting in the front row while others like rappers Gunna and Coi Leray, actor Harry Hamlin, K-pop singer CL and model Behtai Prinsloo-Levine attended the 15 minute show.
Wang incorporated models with different ethnic origins and sizes, including pregnant Adriana Lima who received most of the applause for walking the runway with her baby bump exposed. Models sported a variety of pieces with shades of indigo and brown, denim and leather coats, red velor jumpsuits, chunky wools shrunk into cycling shorts, cropped tops and oversized wool coats.
At the end of the show, Wang ran onto the stage with a big smile, greeting the attendees – who were mostly dressed in black – before darting backstage. The show ended with a heavy dose of red confetti cascading over everyone, creating a party atmosphere, especially for those who attended the Asian night party which featured a market with local food vendors.
At the market, Wang had cameras following him all the time. He had numerous people who greeted him with handshakes, hugs and praise him for his work.
