aliexpress: Alibaba fires 40% of AliExpress Russia staff during the war in Ukraine

Alibaba Group Holding has laid off about 40 percent of the staff at its Russian joint venture as the ongoing Ukrainian crisis disrupts cross-border business, the Nikkei reported Friday.

The Chinese e-commerce giant could not be reached right away for comment.

Citing an employee with knowledge of the matter, the report said it was unclear whether there would be more layoffs after some of the fired staff chose to leave voluntarily and some moved.

The commercial division was the hardest hit, according to the report.

AliExpress Russiaa joint venture launched in 2019 by Alibaba and Russian partners, manages domestic and cross-border transactions.

The company is dependent on cross-border sales for more than three-quarters of its businesses and has been slower to benefit from a pandemic-driven e-commerce boom as supply chains have adapted to new travel limits.
