Crazy Rich Asians spin-off in the works

ONE SPIN-OFF of the romantic comedy of 2018 Rich and crazy Asians It is reportedly in early development at Warner Bros. and will focus on a new romance between Nick’s cousin Astrid Leong-Teo (Gemma Chan) and Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.).

The original film was a huge box office success for the studio, grossing nearly $ 239 million (RM 1.04 billion) worldwide, and as audiences cheered on the romance between the main characters. Nick (played by Henry Golding) and Rachel (Constance Wu), were also intrigued by the unfortunate romance between Astrid and her ex-boyfriend Charlie.

Originally destined for a bigger role in the film, Shum, 40, appeared in a mid-credits scene, her character reunited with Astrid at Rachel and Nick’s engagement party. In the book from which the film is based, written by author Kevin Kwan, Charlie helps Astrid investigate her husband Michael’s infidelity. In the film, Astrid left her husband Michael (Pierre Png) after discovering she was having an affair.

The new film will be based on Kwan’s second book in crazy rich series, entitled Rich girlfriend from China. Follows the romance between Astrid and her first love Charlie of hers, with whom she had previously been engaged until her parents left them because they didn’t see him as a suitable partner.

According to director John M. Chu, Shum’s scenes were cut to focus more on Astrid’s journey throughout the film as she learns to find her own independence. However, fans clearly wanted to see more of Astrid and Charlie, who are the main secondary characters in the books.

According to a report on Deadline, the studio would have taken part in the project after a speech by writer Jason Kim, who will write the spinoff.

In addition to the spin-off, a Rich and crazy Asians the sequel is still in the works, also based on the second book in the series. Chu will reportedly return to direct the film, which will follow Rachel and Nick to Shanghai, where they look for her father.
