Klopp still believes in the possibilities of the Liverpool title

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he maintains the belief that the Reds can beat Manchester City to the Premier League title and keep their hopes of an all-time quadruple alive.

City extended their lead at the top of the table to three points and also increased their goal difference to four better than Liverpool’s with a 5-0 win against Newcastle on Sunday.

The Reds stumbled the day before when they were held 1-1 at home by Tottenham.

However, Klopp ignored suggestions that he should now focus on saving his players’ energy to face Chelsea in Saturday’s FA Cup final and Champions League final against Real Madrid on 28 May.

“Until it is no longer reachable, why should we stop believing it? This is what we do, ”Klopp said at the pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Aston Villa.

“It is clear that it is not over, whatever happened, because we both have three games to play. And my concern is actually: how can we win our games?

“In an ideal world, you win all matches and are always in a great mood. Many times we have to respond to setbacks and that’s what we have to do. “

City boss Pep Guardiola said he believes the whole of England is behind Liverpool’s title bid.

Speaking shortly after winning over Newcastle, Guardiola said: “Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone.”

However, Klopp said he doesn’t have that feeling with the hostile environment that his side face on the road does.

“I have no idea if the whole country is supporting us,” added Klopp. “It’s not the feeling I get when we go to other places and play there, it’s actually the opposite, but maybe he knows more than I do.”

Liverpool definitely have a fan in their next opposition coach.

Steven Gerrard has never won a league title as captain at Anfield, but he is revered as one of the club’s greatest players ever and has been listed as Klopp’s potential successor.

Villa secured safety with a 3-1 win at Burnley at the weekend, but Gerrard said he has no split loyalties when taking on his old club.

“My job is to win matches with Aston Villa, it will always be like that when I represent the club. I want to win, fiercely, and tomorrow is no different, “said Gerrard.

Liverpool were beaten 7-2 on their last visit to Villa Park in October 2020.

But Gerrard believes he has to face the best team in world football right now.

“Liverpool are a world-class team. Probably the best team in the world right now, “he added.

“We are well aware of the size of the challenge, but it is exciting and I can’t wait. Great football matches are what matters. “
