meta: Facebook Meta parent partners with AMD for the mobile infrastructure program

Facebook parent, A half Platforms Inc and chip maker AMD Wednesday said they were teaming up for a mobile Internet infrastructure program this would reduce the cost of the base station broadband connection more accessible around the world.

The program called even starwhich was launched by Meta in early 2020 and promotes a platform called OpenRan this allows cellular network operators to combine hardware and software to create base stations instead of buying everything from a single equipment manufacturer.

This gives operators more flexibility and makes equipment prices more competitive, said Gilles Garcia, an executive at AMD’s data center and communications group.

“They have a very aggressive target for cost, because Meta is also trying to cover uncovered regions and underdeveloped countries. So they want to make sure there are more and more people connected,” Garcia said.

AMD said its radio chip, Xilinx Zynq UltraScale RFSoC, will be used in Evenstar radio units.
