Mother, 2 children attacked by the neighbor’s pit bull

A mother and her two children in South Carolina were attacked by a pit bull while trying to help a neighbor with dementia. It happened on April 26 in Bonneau. Bethany Hastings said the family walked out and found their neighbor had entered their property. She said she and her two children drove the woman home in their golf cart. She said that when they got there, their neighbor’s pit bull was free. “He ran up to us and jumped on the golf cart,” Hastings said. Hastings said the dog lunged at his 2-year-old son and then his 4-year-old daughter. “First he took my brother, then he took me, and then third he took my mother,” said Lainey Bayles, 4. Hastings, who is a nurse, said she was able to remove the dog from her children and held him for 15 minutes until help arrived. She said that during that time the dog continued to throw herself at her. “I had no choice,” Hastings said. “If I had let go, she would have taken me or them again.” A police report claimed that all three were taken to hospital for treatment. Hastings and her son were released from the hospital the same night. Lainey sustained the most serious injuries and spent four days in the hospital with two of them in the pediatric intensive care unit. Lainey will have to undergo procedures in the next year. Authorities say the dog was put down.
