Four-time Grand Slam champion is returning home soon after defeat in opening match against Amanda Anisimova 7-5, 6-4 at Roland Garros. Anisimova, an American, has now beaten Osaka in consecutive Grand Slams after her third round victory at the Australian Open in January.

Osaka withdrew from last year’s French Open on mental health grounds and vowed to avoid speaking to the media. She created a firestorm in the process, receiving support from some and criticism from others.

“I’m not going to lie. When I first came here, I was very worried,” Osaka admitted last week. “I was just a little worried if there were people who – obviously, I didn’t even like the way I handled the situation – but I was worried that there were people I offended in some way, and I would just bump into them.” .

“But I think everyone was really positive, for the most part. I’m not so sure. I was also very worried about this press conference because I knew I was going to get a lot of questions about it,” she added.

Anisimova, 20, reached the semi-finals of the French Open in 2019, eventually losing to champion Ashleigh Barty in three sets.

Osaka, which did not pass the third round at Roland Garros, had to deal with an Achilles tendon injury. Earlier this month she didn’t play in a clay court setup in Rome.

After the game, Osaka said he tends not to compete at Wimbledon, which starts next month.

His comments came following the decision to remove league points from Wimbledon after the All England Club Russian and Belarusian bandit Players from the competition for the invasion of Ukraine.

Osaka said the move to withhold points at Wimbledon “is somehow affecting my mindset” and “she’s not 100% sure if I will go there”.
