No ego at Sundowns – Mngqithi
For a star-studded team like Mamelodi Sundowns, one can always expect cases of a split locker room and egos spinning out of control, but that doesn’t seem to be the case given the amount of success the club has enjoyed in recent years. In fact, Downs manager Manqoba Mngqithi says the formula for keeping his locker room quiet is simple.
He relies on the speak ‘n verstaan mentality, where he and his co-coach, Rhulani Mokwena along with goalkeepers coach Wendell Robison and senior coach Steve Komphela, always move in the same motion, forcing players to shoot in the same direction.

“If we all speak the same language and go in the same direction, it is possible to achieve our goals, but if you want to be a self-employed manager and want to influence 30-35 players, it doesn’t work,” Mngqithi said.
“But if we as leaders do our part very well and stick together and make sure we are not unfair to these kids because they are all like our children and we don’t want to be mean to them and create useless fights with them because it kills the whole environment. They all have confidence to confide in us because they know they have leaders who are their fathers, ”she added.
A couple of teams have suffered from player power, such as Eric Tinkler at SuperSport United when he was ultimately pushed back by the phenomenon. In Downs this does not exist, at least it seems. Mngqithi also has a winning formula, which is what keeps his team grounded.
“The expectation is that it should be one of the hardest things to manage and the moment you start having ego problems in the locker room is because you would not be able to be a proactive leader because it is your responsibility to see that everyone understands what the journey will be like. and share this journey with everyone, ”said Mngqithi.
“We have to make the players understand that there are times when they will find themselves not playing. Not because they did something wrong, but because another player got a chance because one got banned or got injured. If you are a selfish player, it means that when you come back we have to eliminate the other player and play with you, “he added.
