Peaceful & Luxurious retreat at Casa Hormiga in Bacalar [Mexico]
Last May we decided to venture a little farther than the now classic (and a bit boring) Tulum, going to the southern reaches of the Yucatán Peninsula at only 2 hours drive. Very close to the border with Belize, is the town of Bacalar with his magical clear blue lake, and it’s in this mystical and quiet little town that you’ll find the beautifully tranquil and relaxing Casa Hormiga Hotel & Spa.
This jungle sanctuary with its 18-rooms, a spa, a restaurant/bar and pools, opened only a year ago in August 2020 by co-owners Sofia Lynch and Jose Maria Padilla. The Casa Hormiga design, in collaboration with Mexican architecture studio TallerMid51 was inspired by the handmade aesthetics of Morocco (they brought back 4 containers full of amazing furnitures, rugs and objects), and the Spanish Colonial influence offering a maximum relaxation and comfort in a Wabi-sabi environment.
The most relaxing spaces, naturally, are reserved for the spa, which accounts for the “rituals” part of the hotel’s name, and offers treatments influenced by both Maya and Ayurvedic traditions.
We loved the interiors with its sustainable wood which was sourced locally, along with elements crafted by traditional Mayan woodworkers.
The rooms come in themes of ether, earth, and fire, and in all three, patios, verandas, and balconies allow for indoor-outdoor lounging.
Make sure to tryout the hotel if you are around, you will enjoy a quite and relaxing time in this unique and luxurious Hotel & Spa!
