Photos and details of the new Apple MacBook Air

Apple announced a new version of its MacBook Air on Monday at the annual developer conference, WWDC.

The MacBook Air is Apple’s best-selling laptop, and the new design is likely to boost Mac sales in the coming quarters. In recent years, the Mac product line has grown dramatically: shipments grew by about 28% in 2021 versus just under 15% for the entire market, according to an estimate by Canalys.

Overall, Apple’s Mac line has seen an increase in sales both because the pandemic has forced people to buy laptops to work or go to school from home, and because Apple has moved their computers to use their own chips. , instead of those from Intel, which greatly increased the battery life of computers.

The new MacBook Air remains a slim and light laptop at 2.7 pounds, but it features a new look with a constant thickness rather than the tapered wedge design it has been known for in recent years.

At its core is Apple’s brand new M2 chip, which was announced on Monday and will be faster and more energy efficient than Apple’s previous chip. It has two USB-C Thunderbolt ports for connecting monitors and peripherals, a headphone jack and a MagSafe magnetic connector for charging.

The 13.6-inch screen has been enlarged slightly but now has a cutout around the camera, like the cutout around the front camera on iPhones. The video conferencing camera has been updated with higher resolution and better colors.

The new model is also available in four colors: Apple’s traditional silver, gray and gold along with a new matte black color that Apple calls “Midnight”.

The new MacBook Air is more expensive than before, starting at $ 1,199 versus $ 999 for last year’s model, which remains on sale. The most powerful configuration costs $ 2,499.

The company also announced a similarly sized 13-inch MacBook Pro, which was not available for review on Monday. Apple said both new MacBooks would be released next month.

The company has had trouble keeping Macs in stock in the past few weeks as manufacturing was heavily impacted by Covid lockdowns in Shanghai, China.
