Rocked: Darwin struck by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake after noon

An Australian capital was shaken by an earthquake that lasted half a minute and shook buildings.

Darwin was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake that shook buildings in the capital.

Locals reported experiencing tremors for about 30 seconds after 12 noon on Friday, with the quake coming from nearly 140km away in East Timor.

The Bureau of Meteorology told worried local people that there is no tsunami threat from the earthquake.

GeoScience Australia reported having a depth of 28km, with over 500 reports detected so far.

Shaken locals quickly took to social media to share their shock, after seeing the buildings move and the ground shaking for about half a minute.

“Wow, I just felt the earth move here in Darwin! An earthquake just shook our office building here in Casuarina, “one posted on Facebook.

“I just had an earthquake in Darwin. Just a little jolt, nothing serious, “said another.

“The house here in Darwin was rocking! Hoping that the people in Timor did not suffer too much damage in that earthquake, ”commented another.
