The Asian Games in China have been postponed to 2023 due to COVID-19

The Asian Games scheduled in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in September have been postponed to 2023 due to the current COVID-19 situation, Randhir Singh, interim president of the Asian Olympic Council (OCA) said Friday.

The nineteenth edition of the multisport games, second in size only to the Summer Olympics, would take place from 10 to 25 September in the capital of the province of Zhejiang, about 175 kilometers southwest of Shanghai.

Question marks have been raised about the ongoing event with Shanghai which was recently stalled due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

The local organizing committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The decision to postpone the games was made on Friday at an OCA executive committee meeting in Tashkent.

Most international sporting events in China have been postponed or canceled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the notable exception of the Winter Olympics, which took place in Beijing under strict health checks in February.
