Friends in fashion and for life. The Manila Times editor Tessa Mauricio-Arriola is humbled to be an honoree at Monday’s awards among the likes of revered fashion designers Frederick Peralta and Fanny Serrano. Peralta designed her dreamy wedding gown, and Serrano worked his hair and makeup magic on her wedding in 2006.
The Manila Times congratulates its very own multimedia maven Tessa Mauricio-Arriola for her selection as one of the distinguished honorees at the inaugural edition of Philippine Fashion Circle Awards.
The concurrent editor for Lifestyle and Entertainment and The Sunday Times Magazine has long been an advocate of Philippine fashion and local designers since joining the publication in 1999. In fact, her very first column was devoted to fashion and beauty and intendedly titled “Hemlines & Punchlines,” which fittingly captured her trademark writing style that is insightful, witty, entertaining and at times a tad bit quirky.
Her column’s popularity soon led to an offer from the management of Radio Veritas to join a morning talk show sometime in the late ’90s. Then radio station manager Fr. Anton Pascual asked her to share fashion and beauty tips every weekday, which Tessa admitted was a challenge.
Another dear friend, seasoned hair and makeup artist Bambbi Fuentes, is also a PH Circle Awards honoree. Wearing another Frederick Peralta, the editor’s look was polished off by Fuentes on a special birthday celebration.
“I asked Fr. Anton then, ‘Don’t you think it will be difficult to give fashion and beauty tips without a visual component?’ When he told me, ‘Pray about it, dear,’ how else could I not do it right?” she recalled with a chuckle.
Titled “Fashion, Beauty, Atbp,” the segment ran for a good number of years and, of course, always included the promotion of Philippine designers and their work.
As of late, Tessa has turned over the coverage of fashion and beauty events to her lovely and lean and mean Lifestyle and Entertainment team, led by Asst. Editor Christina Alpad, Senior Reporter Iza Iglesias, and researcher Shennah Romanillos, as she oversees the section, The Sunday Times Magazine and crosses over to producing and hosting original content for The Manila Times website and social media platforms. Still, whenever time permits, she will jump at the chance to feature the endless fount of fashion designers and beauty purveyors, especially so when good friends and fellow honorees like her dear Frederick “Aunt Frida” Peralta, and much loved Fanny “TF” Serrano and Bambbi Fuentes take on the glamorous spotlight.
“That’s why I decided to title my current column ‘The T-Zone’ — it somehow has that reference to beauty and fashion still, while allowing me to write about anything that falls under my radar.”
Often touted a fashionista in her own right, Tessa still blushes at the compliment and has this to say about the Philippine Fashion Circle Award’s recognition, “I am truly humbled by this award and am grateful that my years of truly enjoying chronicling the works of our very own style geniuses has somehow contributed to the continued growth and renown of Philippine fashion.”
